Legal Metrology refers to legal requirementsto weight and measurement and Packaged commodities. Legal Metrology Act, 2009
came into force in India w.e.f. 1st April 2011. It is a single Act and covers
the provisions under the Standards of Weights and Measures Act, 1976 and
Standards of Weights and Measures (Enforcement) Act, 1985. It falls under the
Department of Consumer Affairs.

The Legal Metrology Rules, 2011 include 40 types of weighing and measuring
instruments, including but not restricted to electronic weighing instruments, thermometers,
weighbridges, clinical etc. These instruments are occasionally verified by the
State Government officers using the Standard Weights and Measures and the
procedure prescribed in the Rules. Registration requirement for Non-Weight
& Measurement goods require only Packaged Commodity Registration Approval.

Different typesregistrations from the Legal Metrology department 

a) ModelApproval: Forobtaining model approval, the product is sent to a government lab, where the
product is tested on various parameters. If the product is found to conform
with Indian Standards, Model Approval is granted.

b) Importer/ManufacturerLicense: Afterobtaining the Model Approval, the next step is to procure an
Importer/Manufacturer license which gives the licensee the authority to import
or manufacture the product as the case may be.

c) PackagedCommodity Registration: Packaged Commodity Registration must beobtained for all packaged products sold to end consumers. Manufacturer, packer
or importer are required to display or provide information on the product
itself, for example, price, date of manufacture, weight etc. This information
needs to conform with the requirements of this Act and the Rules made
thereunder.

d) DealershipLicense: Thisrequirement is applicable only if the weights and measurements are sold through
dealers. This involves intimating the Government about the dealers involved in
the Sale of Weights & Measurements.

e) Stampingof Product: Stampingof product is done to ensure that the product imported is the same product for
which model approval had been obtained.
